CMA CGM Reflags Ship to Become Largest U.S.-Flagged Containership
ROTTERDAM, SOUTH HOLLAND, JUL 23 – The joint venture aims to support CMA CGM's net-zero goal by supplying up to 360,000 tons of LNG annually and expanding LNG bunkering in the ARA region by 2028.
- On July 24, the CMA CGM Phoenix was officially registered under the U.S. flag during a ceremony held in Charleston, located in South Carolina, becoming the largest container ship to operate under the American registry.
- The reflagging follows CMA CGM’s plan to move four vessels into the U.S. registry and aligns with a $20 billion investment to triple its U.S.-flagged fleet.
- The CMA CGM Phoenix, with a 9,326 TEU capacity, serves routes between the U.S. East Coast and South Asia, and will host cadets from U.S. maritime academies as a training platform.
- Separately, CMA CGM and TotalEnergies formed a 50/50 joint venture to jointly operate a new 20,000-cubic-meter LNG bunker vessel at Rotterdam, supporting maritime energy transition efforts.
- These developments advance U.S. maritime strength objectives and reflect CMA CGM's commitment to fleet growth and decarbonization with LNG-powered ships expected to number 123 by 2029.
