Fifth Arrest in Suvendu Aide Murder Case — Businessman From Varanasi
The agency said it found substantial evidence linking Vinay Rai to the killing and secured a two-day transit remand before moving him to Kolkata.
- On Tuesday, the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested a fifth suspect, 40-year-old Vinay Rai, in Varanasi in connection with the killing of Chandranath Rath, executive assistant to Suvendu Adhikari.
- The investigation, initially conducted by Bengal Police, is now managed by the CBI following the earlier arrests of Mayank Raj Mishra, Vicky Maurya, Raj Singh, and Raj Kumar Singh.
- Detained near the Reserve Police Lines, Rai was produced before a local court in Varanasi, which granted the CBI a two-day transit remand for the suspect from Zamani, Ghazipur.
- Authorities subsequently transported the suspect to Kolkata for further questioning, while investigators suspect the group involved were out-of-state hitmen hired for the killing, though motive remains under investigation.
- The central agency registered a case under multiple sections, including murder and criminal conspiracy, as Uttar Pradesh police assisted the CBI throughout the operation to locate the suspect.
