Ski Lift Demolished as German Glacier Melts Away
Glacier loss in the Bavarian Alps exceeded 25% from 2023 to 2025, forcing removal of ice-based infrastructure on Germany's highest peak.
- On Friday, demolition began on a ski lift atop Germany's Zugspitze mountain as the Schneeferner glacier melts; the operator, Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG, initiated the project after more than 50 years of service.
- Glaciologist Christoph Mayer of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences told AFP that glaciers in Bavaria will inevitably melt, as data released Thursday showed Bavarian glaciers receded by more than a quarter between 2023 and 2025.
- Describing the glaciers as "absolutely doomed," Wilfried Hagg of the Munich University of Applied Sciences stated there is "absolutely no" chance of saving them, even under optimistic climate scenarios.
- Hagg said the remaining two glaciers on Berchtesgarden—Wazmann and Blaueis—are "likely to disappear completely very soon- this year or next," though the northern Schneeferner glacier may survive a few more years.
- According to Earth System Science Data, approximately 41 percent of global glacier loss occurred between 2015 and 2024, leaving the Hoellentalferner as the final glacier on the Zugspitze, projected to vanish in the 2030s.

Experts say that even under the most optimistic scenarios aimed at reducing warming, Germany's glaciers are 100 percent doomed.
In 1967 the Schneefernernekopflift on the Zugspitze goes into operation. Almost 60 years later it has to be blown up – because of climate change.
The last glaciers on Germany's highest mountain are melting faster and faster. Therefore, the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn has now separated itself from its towing lift via the Northern Schneeferner by explosive charge.
