Anthropic Adds Invisible Watermarks to Claude-Generated Text, Images and Files

Anthropic says the watermark will flag Claude text across products and could help teachers detect AI-written essays, though the company has not explained the method.

  • Anthropic announced an invisible watermarking system for Claude to flag AI-generated text, complying with new European transparency laws requiring reasonable detection measures.
  • Although Anthropic has not revealed technical specifics, the system embeds imperceptible signals using set word patterns designed to avoid affecting output meaning, quality, or readability.
  • Teachers increasingly struggle to distinguish student work from AI-generated content. "Because the watermark is part of the text, it will travel with the text when it's copied and pasted elsewhere," Anthropic said.
  • Using Claude to check human-made work may trigger false flags, as the tool only proves text was processed by AI, not authored by it; a negative result does not guarantee human-written content.
  • While competitors like OpenAI and Google apply C2PA watermarks and similar detection systems, ClaudeAI users and critics warn these tools could interfere with editing and act as protection rackets.
