Moya Brennan: Irish Musician Dies Aged 73
Her family said the singer died peacefully, and the Clannad co-founder leaves behind a solo career and decades of awards.
Musician Moya Brennan, best known as the lead singer of the Grammy-winning group Clannad, died peacefully on Monday in Donegal at age 73, surrounded by her family.
Clannad achieved worldwide acclaim in 1982 when their theme song for the TV series 'Harry's Game' became an international hit, bringing Irish-language music to a global audience.
Brennan recorded more than 30 albums as a solo artist and received an Emmy in 2011 for the documentary 'Music of Ireland' and a 2019 RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards Lifetime Achievement Award.
U2 singer Bono called her voice 'one of the greatest voices the human ear has ever experienced,' while Former President Michael D Higgins said her name would be 'forever etched in the history of Irish music.'
Survived by her husband, Tim Jarvis, and her two children, Aisling and Paul, Brennan championed Age Friendly Ireland and the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association, leaving a legacy beyond music.
Moya Brennan, the ‘first lady of Celtic music’, has passed away at the age of 73. She sang and played for many decades in the Irish family band Clannad, also for a time together with her famous sister Enya. Later, she had a successful solo career. Brennan collaborated with many pop stars and very often performed her songs in Irish.
