Cincinnati Reds shut down young ace Chase Burns for groin strain
Burns finishes 15-3 with a 2.86 ERA after the Reds limited his workload and shut him down for the final week.
On Sunday, the Cincinnati Reds placed right-hander Chase Burns on the 15-day injured list with a right groin strain, ending the All-Star's season. The move was retroactive to Saturday.
Reds manager Terry Francona cited caution after Burns pitched a career-high 154 1/3 innings this season. "We're being very cautious," Francona said, noting the team avoided pushing him for another short start.
Burns finishes his campaign with a 15-3 record and 2.86 ERA. His 238 strikeouts in 36 career starts rank third in Reds franchise history since 1900.
In corresponding roster moves Sunday, the Reds designated longtime center fielder TJ Friedl for assignment one day after optioning him to Triple-A Louisville. Friedl batted.172 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 91 games.
The team selected right-hander Carson Spiers from Triple-A Louisville and claimed versatile Oswaldo Cabrera from the New York Yankees, signaling strategic roster moves ahead of the 2027 season.
The Cincinnati Reds put Chase Burns right on the list of injured 15 days on Sunday by a distension in the right groin, which put an end to the season of the star baller.
