Christa Pike’s lawyer says she has not regained consciousness since her failed Tennessee execution
Doctors are trying to clear the drug from her system as her lawyers say her prognosis may not be known for days.
On Sunday, Assistant Federal Defender Stephen Ferrell said Christa Pike remains unconscious on a ventilator at a Tennessee hospital, four days after a failed execution attempt on Wednesday night.
Pike, now 50, was 18 when she and her boyfriend tortured and killed classmate Colleen Slemmer in 1995, becoming one of the youngest women sent to death row in Tennessee.
Tennessee prison officials administered two doses of pentobarbital on Wednesday night; lawyers said the caustic drugs left Pike with burned and blistered arms.
When asked on CNN's 'State of the Union' if Pike regained consciousness, Ferrell replied, 'Not that I am aware of.' Pike gave someone medical power of attorney protecting her privacy.
A spokeswoman for the defense team said early Sunday, 'We appreciate all respect for Christa's rightful privacy.' Doctors continue attempting to remove the massive barbiturate dose from her system.
