Christa Pike unconscious, on ventilator at Nashville hospital, her lawyers say
Lawyers said two doses of pentobarbital failed, leaving the 50-year-old inmate unconscious and on a ventilator after the execution attempt.
On Friday, attorneys for Christa Pike reported she remains unconscious and on a ventilator in a Tennessee hospital following a failed execution attempt on Wednesday night. Pike is being treated for the effects of pentobarbital administered during the procedure.
The execution process lasted over two hours, with Pike's lawyers claiming IV lines were incorrectly placed, causing pentobarbital to enter her tissue instead of her bloodstream. The team then administered a backup set of syringes after the initial failure.
Defense lawyer Randall Spivey, who witnessed the procedure, recalled Pike saying her arm felt like it would "explode." The execution team worked for an hour to administer drugs, leaving at least seven needles in her left arm.
Gov. Bill Lee demanded a review of Tennessee's execution procedures and indefinitely postponed Pike's execution and another slated for this year. State officials have not offered an explanation for what occurred during the attempt.
Other Republican leaders in Tennessee are questioning whether to abandon single-drug lethal injections in favor of alternative methods. Pike's legal team filed emergency motions asking the state to preserve all evidence from the failed execution attempt.
