China’s top diplomat meets leader of Myanmar’s military-backed government on regional tour
The two sides discussed border stability, cybercrime and internal peace efforts as China remains Myanmar's biggest trading partner and a major investor.
- On Saturday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang visited Naypyitaw and met Min Aung Hlaing, leader of Myanmar's military-backed government, as part of a regional tour strengthening China's political, security, and strategic ties in Southeast Asia.
- Min Aung Hlaing was sworn in as president on April 10 following an election critics say was neither free nor fair, designed to maintain military grip on power five years after it ousted Aung San Suu Kyi.
- China maintains ties with ethnic armed groups including the "Three Brotherhood Alliance", which fought for decades for autonomy, while China-brokered ceasefires last year allowed Myanmar to retake key territories and regain the upper hand.
- State-Run MRTV reported the two leaders exchanged views on border stability, trade, cybercrime cooperation, and Myanmar's internal peace efforts, with Min Aung Hlaing emphasizing that restoring normal relations with The ASEAN is a top priority.
- Beijing's outreach potentially reshapes ASEAN engagement as China deepens its strategic stake through investments in infrastructure and arms sales, which critics say complicates the bloc's peace plan for Myanmar.
