China's Huawei to launch two new AI chips in 2027

Huawei said its new Ascend 960DT and 960PR chips will double performance and support larger AI systems as it builds a rival to Nvidia.

  • On Thursday, Huawei Technologies rotating chairman David Wang announced at Huawei Connect in Shanghai that the company will launch two new AI semiconductors—the Ascend 960DT in Q1 2027 and the Ascend 960PR in Q3 2027.
  • U.S. export controls have blocked advanced chip imports since 2019, prompting Huawei to prioritize domestic technology development and reduce its dependence on Nvidia for AI computing capabilities.
  • Huawei utilizes its Peerium Computing Architecture and UnifiedBus protocol to link massive numbers of processors into unified systems, with the new Ascend 960 SuperPoD connecting up to 4,096 chips.
  • Rotating chairman Eric Xu acknowledged that production capacity remains insufficient to satisfy domestic demand alone, limiting Huawei's ability to pursue fully-fledged international expansion at this stage.
  • These technological advancements coincide with geopolitical tensions as U.S. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to meet on September 24 in Washington to discuss ongoing competition.
