FBI chief: China agreed on plan to stop fentanyl precursors
China has banned all 13 fentanyl precursors and seven chemical subsidiaries to cut supply routes, aiming to reduce nearly 100,000 U.S. overdose deaths in 2024, FBI says.
- On Wednesday, FBI Director Patel announced China agreed to stop producing and exporting chemicals used to make fentanyl at the White House press secretary's media briefing.
- Following a recent Trump-Xi meeting, officials said eliminating fentanyl precursors was essential to stopping the epidemic and discussed ways to `crush the plague of fentanyl`.
- Designating 13 precursors, China also agreed to control chemical subsidiaries, and Patel reported enforcement data showing over 1,900 kilograms of fentanyl seized since President Donald Trump took office.
- ‘Effective immediately,’ Patel said, and officials claimed the Chinese government agreed to control fentanyl precursors to `suffocate` Mexican drug trafficking organizations’ ability to manufacture fentanyl.
- Patel said his trip to Beijing, the first by an FBI director in over a decade, aimed to attack precursors as nearly 100,000 died in 2024, a 31% increase.
