China says it is 'safeguarding order' around Taiwan-controlled South China Sea atoll
Taipei says Chinese ships entered restricted waters and were driven off after radio warnings, with 15 expulsions reported this year.
- On Wednesday, China's government claimed its coast guard was "safeguarding order" near the Pratas, while Taiwan reported two incidents since Sunday of Chinese vessels approaching the strategically located atoll.
- Beijing is attempting to "domesticate" the Taiwan issue to "create an illusion of having de facto jurisdiction over Taiwan's surrounding waters and offshore islands," said Mainland Affairs Council head Chiu Chui-cheng on Tuesday.
- The Coast Guard Administration reported conducting 15 expulsions of Chinese vessels this year, noting China employs "fake law enforcement" and "dark ship" tactics by turning off AIS to hide locations.
- Randall Schriver, chair of the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, called the patrols "highly destabilizing," describing them as an extension of Beijing's legal and political warfare against Taipei.
- China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhang Han defended the patrols as "indisputable sovereignty," blaming Taiwan's "obstinate insistence" on separatism for the risk of war across the Taiwan Strait.
