China opposes US move to list top firms as military companies
China said the move ignored a recent summit consensus and warned it could retaliate if U.S. treatment of its firms does not improve.
On Monday, the United States Defense Department updated its list of firms allegedly aiding China's military, adding technology giants Alibaba, Baidu, BYD, and NIO to the roster.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce expressed strong dissatisfaction on Saturday, stating the move "ignored the consensus" reached during President Donald Trump and Jinping's summit in Beijing last month.
BYD, Alibaba, and Baidu stated there is "no basis" for their inclusion, while Defense Department rules prohibit direct contracting with listed firms starting in 2027.
Beijing warned it will "inevitably retaliate resolutely and forcefully" if Chinese firms are not treated fairly, urging Washington to return to a "constructive strategic and stable China-US relationship."
Reflecting Washington's security concerns, the Pentagon continues identifying firms key to advancing China's military and industrial prowess amid intense geopolitical competition between the countries.
