China is catching up to the US in brain tech, rivaling firms like Elon Musk’s Neuralink
CHINA, JUL 20 – Chinese scientists have implanted wireless brain chips in five patients, matching Neuralink's trial numbers amid strong government support and a $2.6 billion global brain tech market.
- A March, Beijing Radio and Television Station filmed demonstration, involving five patients implanted with the coin-sized Beinao-1 wireless chip.
- Xi Jinping's ambition to elevate China into a science powerhouse underpins the Chinese Institute for Brain Research in 2023, as China entered brain tech in the 1990s.
- Unlike more invasive systems, as described by developers, Beinao-1 records a wider range of brain areas with lower precision per neuron and differs in implant location, signal types, and data transmission methods.
- Luo Minmin said the system shows `high accuracy` in decoding brain signals after the procedure.
- Luo Minmin's team plans over next year, to implant chips into 50 to 100 more patients, as the market for brain technology is expected to rise from $2.6 billion last year to $12.4 billion by 2034, Precedence Research says.

“I want to eat” popped up in Chinese characters on a computer at a public hospital in central Beijing. The words were formed from the thoughts of a 67-year-old woman with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, who is unable to speak.
Newtalk News On a computer screen in a hospital in Beijing, the words "I want to eat" appeared. This sentence comes from a 67-year-old woman with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), who uses a chip implanted in her brain to convert brain signals into text. She has been unable to speak for many years, but now she can "speak" again through the "Bei Nao No. 1" chip. This achievement is a major breakthrough in China's brain-computer interface (BCI…
