China Commissions World's First Mid-Infrared Solar Telescope

The AIMS telescope improves solar magnetic field measurement accuracy beyond 10 Gauss, aiding space weather forecasting and filling a global observation gap, researchers said.

  • On Friday, the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences commissioned AIMS, the world's first mid-infrared solar magnetic-field telescope, at about 4,000 meters in Lenghu township, Qinghai Province, filling the international observation gap.
  • After multi-year development, site surveys found Lenghu had clear, photometric conditions with low precipitable water vapour for 55 percent of nights, supporting AIMS project completion.
  • The instrument's off-axis optical system uses domestically produced components, enabling direct solar magnetic-field measurements at 12.3-micron wavelength with accuracy exceeding 10 Gauss.
  • During commissioning, AIMS captured mid-infrared flare data, with Deng stating, `'The magnetic field is extremely important for us to understand many key scientific issues in solar physics. Flares and coronal mass ejections are both disastrous space weather conditions dominated by magnetic field interactions, which have an impact on national economy and high-tech technologies on Earth. Therefore, this telescope can promote the monitoring and forecasting of disastrous space weather,' said Deng.
  • Nearby projects including MUST and SONG are underway, and Zhang Jing said, `'With the new observatory in sight, Lenghu is gaining popularity and attracting more tourists.
