Amsterdam – The European Medicines Agency's (EMA) Safety Committee has initiated a review of Ixchiq, a live-attenuated vaccine against chikungunya, following reports of serious adverse events in older people. The agency recommends that Ixchiq be temporarily discontinued in adults aged 65 and older.

IXCHIQ, a vaccine against chikungunya virus, was originally approved for people aged 12 and over. Suspected serious adverse reactions have now been reported in older people with pre-existing underlying disease.
