BALRAMPUR DISTRICT, UTTAR PRADESH, INDIA, JUL 09 – Jamaluddin alias Chhangur Baba allegedly ran a foreign-funded racket worth Rs 106 crore coercing vulnerable women into conversions with caste-based financial incentives, say officials.
- On July 5, authorities in Lucknow detained Jamaluddin, also known as Chhangur Baba, along with his associate Neetu, in connection with their involvement in a religious conversion scheme.
- The arrest followed investigations revealing Chhangur Baba amassed over Rs 106 crore across 40 bank accounts, funded largely by foreign sources, primarily from the Middle East.
- Officials stated he operated a 15-year network based in Balrampur district, coercing vulnerable groups into conversions and acquiring assets including a Rs 16-crore estate in Lonavala.
- The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, stated that the accused’s actions were harmful to both society and the nation, and emphasized that their properties would be confiscated with stringent legal measures enforced.
- The Enforcement Directorate registered a case on July 9 to investigate money laundering and foreign fund violations, while demolition of illegal constructions on government land began.
