CFIA says it has culled ostriches at B.C. farm
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency culled over 300 ostriches to control avian flu after the Supreme Court rejected the farm's appeal, officials said.
- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Friday it has culled the ostrich population at Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood, British Columbia, after the Supreme Court of Canada declined the owners' appeal.
- Last December, avian flu was detected in the flock, killing 70 birds and prompting a depopulation order issued more than 10 months ago when 300 to 330 ostriches were estimated on the farm, CFIA said.
- After consulting experts, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency chose professional marksmen in a controlled on-farm setting, with all depopulation activities completed under CFIA veterinary supervision.
- The RCMP will remain on site at the CFIA's request during disposal and demobilization, after Mounties helped close the road Friday and were present Thursday at the Edgewood farm cull.
