CERN Successfully Transports Antimatter by Truck in World-First Test Drive

CERN transported about 100 antiprotons around its Geneva campus, with roughly 91% surviving the test, advancing future antimatter delivery to research labs.

  • Scientists at CERN in Geneva successfully completed a "pioneering" 30-minute road test on Tuesday, transporting 92 antiprotons inside a specially designed 1,000-kilogram cryogenic box.
  • Because antimatter annihilates instantly upon contact with regular matter, the particles had to be suspended in a vacuum using supercooled magnets to prevent them from touching the walls of the container.
  • Led by spokesperson Stefan Ulmer, the experiment aimed to prove that infinitesimal particles can survive the vibrations and "bumps in the road" of traditional vehicle transport without seeping out or being destroyed.
  • This successful campus run is the first step toward a long-term plan to deliver antiprotons to external research facilities, such as Heinrich Heine University in Germany, for high-accuracy comparisons between matter and antimatter.
