- On Friday, The Union Government notified 40 questions for Population Census 2027, requiring respondents to record their "Caste" during the Population Enumeration exercise beginning August 17 in snow-bound regions.
- Census Commissioner officials stated respondents will record caste in an "open column," marking the first time caste enumeration occurs in Independent India beyond Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes. This follows pre-tests in 16 States and Union Territories.
- New requirements include identification details such as Aadhaar Number, Voter ID, Passport, and Mobile Number, alongside Bank Accounts and Covid-19 Vaccination status. These additions expand the questionnaire's scope significantly.
- Field work begins August 17 in Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, backed by Rs 11,718 crore approved by The Union Cabinet. Population Enumeration continues nationwide in February 2027.
- Officials will collect detailed socio-economic Information including literacy status, Highest educational level, and Occupation. Additional questions address migration, marital Status, and employment availability for marginal and non-workers.
