California revoked 17,000 commercial driver’s licenses issued to non-domiciled immigrants to comply with federal safety standards after a fatal Florida truck crash prompted a national review.
- The California Department of Motor Vehicles admitted it illegally issued 17,000 commercial driver's licenses, the U.S. Department of Transportation said on Nov. 12.
- Following a DOT audit, officials noted the action came weeks after a nationwide commercial driver’s license audit launched after a Florida crash that killed three people and other fatal truck crashes in Texas and Alabama earlier this year.
- Affected commercial drivers were notified their licenses will expire in 60 days, California state transportation officials did not immediately answer questions, and DOT investigators reported one quarter of 145 licenses reviewed shouldn’t have been issued.
- Duffy has revoked $40 million in federal funding and warned of further cuts, noting only 10,000 of 200,000 noncitizen commercial license holders qualify under H-2a, H-2b and E-2 visa categories.
