Cathay Pacific, Google expand AI trials to cut climate-warming aircraft contrails

  • On Monday, Cathay Pacific and Google announced expansion of their AI-powered contrail mitigation trials across the airline's intra-Asia, transpacific, and polar networks following successful initial tests.
  • The initial pilot project, which began in late 2025, achieved a 40 per cent decline in contrail warming by prompting pilots to avoid atmospheric sweet spots where they tend to form.
  • Google's AI-based forecasting tools identify areas where contrails form, allowing altitude adjustments. "Aviation needs solutions to address climate change, and AI is accelerating that progress," said Lawrence Fong, Cathay's director of digital and IT.
  • Research indicates that just 2% to 3% of flights produce around 80% of contrail warming, making targeted avoidance strategies potentially effective for the global aviation industry.
  • Describing the method as "extremely low-cost and effective," Kemal Armada, Google's Zurich-based contrail research lead, noted that altitude adjustments could prevent persistent cloud formation, addressing real-world climate challenges at scale.
