Nuclear Power Could More than Triple by 2060, UN Agency Says
The agency said electrification and AI data centers are driving demand as more than 60 reactors are now under construction.
On Friday, International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Grossi announced that global nuclear power capacity could more than triple by 2060, driven by artificial intelligence demand and technology companies seeking reliable, carbon-free energy.
Currently, more than 400 operating reactors in more than 30 countries produce 10% of global electricity, while more than 60 new reactors are under construction as capacity projections shift dramatically upward.
In Ukraine, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe's largest, remains "in a precarious position," Grossi warned, citing frequent power losses and military activity threatening the facility and personnel.
Addressing nuclear programs in Iran and North Korea, Grossi warned that leader Kim Jong Un's growing program "stands as a stark reminder of the consequences when red lines are crossed" in violation of Security Council resolutions.
Cooperation with interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa's government yielded "significant progress" in clarifying Syria's nuclear activities after nearly two decades of uncertainty, marking diplomatic advancement amid ongoing safety challenges.
