Carney, MPs raise Pride Flag on Parliament Hill
Carney called the Pride flag a symbol of belonging and vigilance as protesters interrupted the ceremony twice.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney and Women and Gender Equality Minister Rechie Valdez raised the Pride Flag on Parliament Hill, marking the official start of Pride season in Ottawa.
Carney told Parliament Hill staffers that LGBTQ+ rights are backsliding globally and noted the community remains underrepresented in Canada's democracy, calling the flag-raising an 'act of vigilance.'
During his remarks, Carney was interrupted twice by pro-Palestinian protesters, to which he responded that today was a day for "celebration."
The government previously committed $7.5 million over five years in its fall budget for security at Pride festivals across the country, with $1.5 million in ongoing annual support.
Carney said he was looking forward to participating in Pride parades across Canada later this month, extending his engagement with the community beyond today's ceremony.
