Canva's First Homegrown Image Model Debuts Fourth on DesignArena, Behind Only OpenAI

The model uses a two-stage system and is available to all users, with Canva saying it can create images with precise text and object placement.

  • On Thursday, Australian design software giant Canva released its first in-house image generation model, Canva Craft, which uses a two-stage architecture for "greater precision, consistency and control."
  • Canva trained Craft on "millions of human-made templates" from its content library, enabling image generation at up to 2K resolution in more than 30 aspect ratios.
  • Users can access the tool via the Dream Lab tab, where the system supports layers for precise edits and allows images to be converted into designs using Canva Magic.
  • The company intends to support image generation in third-party chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini through the Model Context Protocol, while planning to roll out more efficient Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast models.
  • This release puts Canva in direct competition with OpenAI and Google, emerging amid a revenue downgrade where backers slashed $10 billion from its valuation, which now sits at $35 billion.
