Canadian veterans outraged by Trump’s NATO comments
Canadian veterans and officials condemned Trump's claim that NATO partners played a minimal role in Afghanistan despite 158 Canadian deaths and thousands injured, officials said.
- On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump told Fox News that NATO's role in Afghanistan was minimal, prompting Canadian veterans and officials to reject the remarks as disrespectful.
- Article 5's invocation after Sept. 11 led Canada and other NATO allies to join U.S. operations in Afghanistan, with more than 40,000 Canadian Armed Forces serving and 158 Canadian soldiers killed.
- Luloff recalled frontline fighting in Kandahar, saying he and fellow soldiers fought face to face with the Taliban nearly every single day during his eight-month 2008 deployment and survived close rocket-propelled grenade attacks.
- On Saturday, Defence Minister David McGuinty told media on Parliament Hill that Canadians will never forget their troops' sacrifices, while Donald Trump praised U.K. soldiers and some American veterans apologised to Canadian veteran Keenan Geiger.
- Keenan Geiger, who served in 2009–2010, said he has grown `pretty desensitized` to Trump’s remarks and recalled the Dec. 30, 2009 roadside bomb that killed four soldiers and Calgary Herald reporter Michelle Lang.
