‘Significant casualties’ after explosion at Alberta military base: MP
Officials say the blaze spread rapidly in high winds, and air ambulances were dispatched as authorities worked to confirm casualties.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed a "serious incident creating a major fire" at CFB Wainwright, located east of Edmonton, in a social media post.
High winds caused a "large fire" near the base to spread rapidly into the Municipal District of Wainwright, crossing municipal boundaries as emergency responders mobilized.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the blaze as "a significant and tragic fire at CFB Wainwright that is affecting many of our brave military personnel," and said the province remains in "close contact" with federal authorities.
Suzanne Lalande, a spokesperson with the Department of National Defence, confirmed the department is aware of "an incident in Wainwright, Alberta," emphasizing that safety and security remain their "highest priority."
Officials have not released details regarding the cause of the blaze or injuries, though the Department of National Defence will provide additional information as it becomes available and can be confirmed.
