Carney hits Calgary to stump for unity, gets swarmed by selfie-seeking well-wishers
Carney urged Albertans to reject separation and nine other ballot questions as he drew small crowds and selfies at campaign stops.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Mark Carney toured Calgary to rally the pro-Canada vote ahead of Monday's referendum, posing for selfies and signing flags with well-wishers throughout the city.
Carney urged Albertans to reject nine ballot questions involving immigration and the Constitution, which critics label an anti-immigrant dog whistle seeking to wrest power from Ottawa and abolish the Senate.
At a park rally with fewer than 100 people, Carney told the crowd, "It's time for us to come together," adding, " no to the nine."
Later Thursday, Carney joins former Alberta deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk at a Forever Canadian rally, while Smith headlines a United Conservative Party fundraiser and speaks Friday in Calgary alongside federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.
Earlier this week, Smith posted a video announcing she voted to stay in Canada while urging Albertans to approve the other nine questions, claiming they provide leverage for a strong Alberta.
Prime Minister Mark Carney conducted a last-minute campaign on Thursday, urging his supporters to vote not only for Canada's retention in Confederation, but also to reject the other nine issues put to the vote by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.
