‘Vote like Canada depends on it,’ PM Carney tells Alberta referendum rally
Carney said Alberta faces deep division and uncertainty if voters back separation, while the Prime Minister’s Office is spending about $250,000 on an ad campaign.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Mark Carney urged thousands at a Calgary rally to vote for Confederation in Monday's referendum, warning that separation would cause "deep division and great uncertainty."
The ballot asks Albertans to decide whether to remain in Canada or separate, while Premier Danielle Smith seeks approval for nine questions aimed at wresting power from Ottawa.
Smith's government committed $4 million to an advertising campaign for the nine questions, while the Prime Minister's Office is spending about $250,000 on its "O Canada" campaign.
At the event, which drew at least 5,000 attendees, Carney described the separation push as a "dangerous bluff" that could lead to years of lost opportunities.
Carney will attend another rally in Edmonton on Friday, while Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is scheduled to deliver a speech supporting Canadian unity at a Calgary conference.
