Canada’s UN envoy touts primacy of global law as advocates say Ottawa pulling punches
Canada's UN Ambassador David Lametti says international rules face pressure from major and regional powers and that Canada is concerned about attacks on civilians, aid workers, and UN staff.
Lametti noted humanitarian law is not attacked directly but is being undermined indirectly, emphasizing the importance of calling out such violations to maintain international legal order.
Lametti and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, both former law professors, aim to defend and shape global rules to protect smaller countries.
Former diplomat Sabine Nolke warned that without stronger action, Canada may be seen as weak on international law, risking difficulties in defending its interests against coercion.
