Cambodia launches UN-backed process to settle maritime dispute with Thailand
Cambodia says the UN-backed process could help settle claims over an area estimated to hold about $300 billion in oil and gas.
- On Tuesday, Cambodia informed the United Nations and Thailand it launched a compulsory conciliation process under UNCLOS to resolve a long-running maritime boundary dispute with Bangkok.
- Both countries claim approximately 26,000 square kilometres in the Gulf, known as the Overlapping Claims Area, which holds nearly 339.8 billion cubic metres of natural gas and oil worth about $300 billion.
- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet appointed Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn as agent, alongside Danish diplomat Peter Taks and French academic Jean-Marc Thouvenin as conciliators for the proceedings.
- Thailand has 21 days to appoint two conciliators to finalize a commission overseen by the Secretary-General, though Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Tuesday he was unaware of the move.
- The oil shock from the Iran conflict created renewed urgency to resolve the dispute and unlock energy resources, Cambodia's energy minister said last week, following Thailand's termination of a 2001 negotiation framework.
