Cambodia continues raids on scam centers, bringing arrests in past 3 weeks to over 2,100
CAMBODIA, JUL 19 – Cambodian authorities arrested over 2,100 suspects across multiple provinces in a crackdown targeting cybercrime and human trafficking, with 73 prosecutions and 2,322 deportations reported.
- Reporting on July 18, Neth Pheaktra said authorities arrested 500 suspects in two provinces, while total detentions reached 2,000 nationwide.
- Backed by a directive issued Monday by Hun Manet, the Cambodian government threatened transfers or dismissal for inaction, while he said other ASEAN members acted this year to curb online crime.
- Authorities operating in 43 locations arrested dozens of foreign suspects, including 429 Vietnamese, 271 Indonesians, 589 Chinese, 57 Koreans, 70 Bangladeshis and 42 Pakistanis, Information Minister Neth Pheaktra said.
- So far, authorities have prosecuted 73 individuals and deported 2,322 foreign suspects.
- According to the United Nations and other agencies, cyberscams originating from Southeast Asia earn billions annually, while investigations suggest collusion between Chinese compound bosses and the Cambodian police.
