Calgary mayor says brief shutdown of water main coming in September
Mayor Jeromy Farkas says the closure is planned work for a new pumping station, with any outdoor watering limits depending on weather and demand.
Mayor Jeromy Farkas announced on Thursday that the Bearspaw South Feeder Main will close for less than a week in September to complete electrical work on a new pumping station.
Work began earlier this year to fast-track a replacement for the Bearspaw feeder main, which suffered its second catastrophic failure in less than two years back in December.
The feeder main provides 60 per cent of treated water for the 1.6 million residents of Calgary, nearby municipalities and the Tsuut'ina Nation.
Farkas said in a social media post Thursday that this is "planned work," noting any September restrictions would be easier for residents to manage with outdoor watering likely permitted.
Final work on the Bearspaw South Feeder Main is scheduled for October, when Farkas anticipates about four more weeks of water restrictions as the city completes the replacement in a single year.
