B.C. Issues Protection Order for Salmon River Watershed as Fish Spawn

The order limits irrigation for 458 licences as drought and low streamflows threaten more than 200 adult Chinook salmon.

  • On Wednesday, The Ministry reissued a temporary protection order for the Salmon River to protect migrating Chinook amid critically low streamflows threatening the fish population during their critical spawning cycle.
  • The province initially issued the TPO July 28 but rescinded it August 8 to address wildfire risks; however, the BC Wildlife Federation pressured Minister Randene Neil on Tuesday to reinstate the order.
  • Effective immediately, 458 surface water and groundwater license holders in the Salmon River watershed must cease using water for irrigation of forage crops, lawns, and fairways until environmental flows improve.
  • "The order was working," said Jesse Zeman, executive director of the BCWF, noting water levels stabilized while the TPO was active and warning that two cohorts of endangered Chinook could be lost without it.
  • Provincial staff will continue monitoring streamflows throughout the season, while the Agriculture Ministry provides support to drought-affected producers through programs; farmers can contact AgriService at 1-888-221-7141 for assistance.
