Thailand's cabinet has approved the hiring of 10,000 Sri Lankan workers as it tries to address a labour shortage caused by Cambodian workers returning home in the wake of a deadly border conflict between the two countries, a Thai senior official said on Tuesday.
In Thailand, almost a month after the worst confrontations on the border with Cambodia in decades, the authorities are calling on foreign workers. The ceasefire remains fragile today. While the conflict has killed 43 people, it has also led to the displacement of tens of thousands of people in the overwhelming majority of Cambodian workers indispensable to the Thai economy. It is to replace them that the authorities are launching a plan.
The Minister of Labor is confident that US tariffs will not impact the Thai labor market, following scrutiny over the sudden surge in factory closures. He stated that the Cabinet has approved the import of Sri Lankan workers to replace the Cambodian exodus.
