Governor Praises Local Who Helped End Mass Shooting at Oregon School
Gov. Tina Kotek said the intervention likely saved lives after the gunman killed 4 people and wounded 2 others, police said.
On Thursday, a 16-year-old gunman attacked Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, killing three children and a teacher before being found dead inside the building minutes after the first emergency calls.
Governor Tina Kotek praised an unidentified local resident who pursued the gunman into the school, saying their intervention helped end the rampage and likely saved lives as police arrived at the scene.
Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed the deceased children were ages 5, 8, and 11, while a 54-year-old teacher and a 7-year-old child remain hospitalized in critical condition.
With classes canceled Friday for the area's 32 schools, residents held a vigil Thursday night to mourn, leaving flowers and stuffed animals outside Silver Rail Elementary School.
This tragedy marks the 28th mass killing in the U.S. this year, echoing a similar incident four years ago when a grocery worker in Bend intervened during a supermarket shooting.
