Byju’s founder Raveendran sentenced to six months in jail for contempt of court: Report
The court also ordered him to surrender and pay S$90,000 after finding repeated noncompliance with asset disclosure orders.
- On Wednesday, a Singapore court sentenced Byju Raveendran, founder of edtech startup Byjus, to six months in prison for contempt of court. He was directed to surrender himself, pay S$90,000 in costs and provide documents proving legal ownership of Beeaar Investco Pte.
- The Singapore proceedings were initiated by a Qatar Investment Authority subsidiary investor, following prior U.S. court findings that held Raveendran in contempt and imposed daily sanctions for failing to comply with disclosure requirements tied to a $1.2 billion loan dispute.
- At its 2022 peak, the Bengaluru-based company was valued at about $22 billion with roughly 60,000 employees. Raveendran acquired Aakash Educational Services, WhiteHat Jr, Great Learning and Epic through global investor backing before disputes with lenders emerged.
- Raveendran claimed on social media that a settlement had been agreed in principle with only minor issues remaining, stating all parties had paused litigation to work toward resolution and characterizing QIA's actions as unnecessary pressure tactics.
- Governance concerns, delayed financial disclosures and mounting losses surfaced in 2023 as Byjus laid off thousands amid severe funding shortages. An Enforcement Directorate raid followed in April 2023 over alleged foreign exchange violations, with India subsequently witnessing shareholder revolts and insolvency proceedings.
