BYD's $3 Million Hypercar Crashes at 224 MPH, Driver Walks Away
BYD said the driver was unharmed after the hypercar lost traction and struck a barrier during runs aimed at a 500 km/h record.
- On Monday, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme crashed in China during a high-speed track run, causing the rear axle to detach from the vehicle. The driver exited the $3 million hypercar unharmed despite severe structural damage.
- Equipped with a quad-motor setup on a 1,200 V silicon carbide platform, this $3 million USD supercar delivers 2,220 kW and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in under 2.0 seconds. The vehicle was undergoing preliminary testing to reach 261-280 mph before the UAE record attempt.
- Previously, the Xtreme reached 496.22 km/h at Automotive Testing Papenburg in Germany during September 2025. The design includes an 80 kWh battery with 30C discharge technology and a large aerodynamic rear wing for extreme-speed performance.
- Yangwang sales division general manager Hu Xiaoqing confirmed the company still intends to attempt a 500 km/h speed record in the UAE despite the recent accident. Engineers have fine-tuned the powertrain for the next phase of testing.
- BYD vice president Stella Li originally disclosed the high-speed testing plans, with the Xtreme engineered to utilize 30C discharge technology managing its extreme 2,977 horsepower output. Only 30 production units will be built at $3 million each.
