Lagos Govt to Arrest, Prosecute Buyers Patronising Roadside Traders

- Starting next week, the Lagos Waste Management Authority will arrest and prosecute individuals purchasing goods from traders operating in unauthorized public spaces across Lagos State.
- Managing Director Muyiwa Gbadegesin explained that roadside trading obstructs public infrastructure and leads to waste dumping in drains, traffic congestion, and public health risks.
- Enforcement follows Section 151 subsection 2 of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017, with convictions carrying a N90,000 fine, six months in prison, or both.
- Gbadegesin stressed that buyers sustain illegal markets and must be held accountable, urging residents to patronize recognized markets and use approved waste collection channels.
- Recently, the Authority disengaged sweepers and supervisors along the Oworonshoki-Berger axis for alleged waste dumping, underscoring commitment to maintaining environmental standards across all personnel.
