Hamilton City Hall to be Significantly Impacted by New Provincial Development Charge and Building Rules
- The Ontario government is set to implement new legislation in 2025 that will impact Hamilton City Hall and other municipalities starting May 13, introducing changes to building and planning regulations aimed at accelerating development.
- The legislation aims to harmonize building rules and accelerate housing near transit, responding to high development charges and housing demand across 444 municipalities.
- Hamilton is now required to permit increased residential development near the future LRT route and comply with updated provincial mandates on study requirements, while postponing the rollout of its Green Building Standards for additional consultation.
- Minister Rob Flack emphasized the need for 56,000 to 60,000 new or refurbished long-term care beds and stated, "I'm hoping they take the lead and follow by example."
- The Act requires municipalities to collect development charges only at occupancy and may reduce financial burdens, with $400 million added to infrastructure funding supporting housing growth.
