Buffy The Vampire Slayer Star Sarah Michelle Gellar Reveals Who to Blame for Cancelled Reboot
Sarah Michelle Gellar blamed a Hulu executive unfamiliar with the original series for halting the reboot despite a well-received rewrite and strong industry support, sources said.
- On Friday, Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich cancelled the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, delivering the news to actress Sarah Michelle Gellar moments before her SXSW Film & TV Festival premiere of Ready or Not 2.
- Gellar alleged one executive 'was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series,' creating an 'uphill battle' since day one.
- Director Chloé Zhao and writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman led the pilot, which featured actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong as a new slayer. Studios 20th Television and Searchlight Television had praised the rewrite.
- Armstrong, 16, expressed disappointment on Instagram, while Gellar and Zhao shared their own 'disappointment' with the cancellation. A Hulu source told Variety there is 'a lot of love for Buffy,' suggesting the door remains open.
- Disney owns the intellectual property, so the project cannot move elsewhere as it stands today. However, the creative team could potentially take their talent and ideas to other networks.
