- Selected out of Nebraska in the 2012 NFL draft, David became a defensive cornerstone for Tampa Bay and retires tied with Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks for the franchise tackle record with 1,714.
- "Lavonte's mark on our franchise could never be overstated," Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said, citing David's role anchoring the defense during the 2020 Super Bowl 55 championship and three All-Pro honors.
- Head coach Todd Bowles praised David's intelligence, saying he "understood the game so well" by the time they worked together. Chris Godwin Jr. becomes the elder statesman as the team transitions to younger leaders.
- David plans to focus on fatherhood and explore opportunities in broadcasting, scouting or coaching. The Buccaneers will "look forward to honoring his Hall of Fame-worthy achievements in the near future.
