B.C. Crews Fight to Prevent Brunswick Wildfire From Moving East Toward Merritt
Crews are protecting homes and highways as the Brunswick complex grows to 19,000 hectares and temperatures rise into the low 30s, officials said.
Wildland firefighters in British Columbia are planning "heavy helicopter bucketing" today to prevent an out-of-control blaze near Boston Bar from moving east toward Merritt across terrain inaccessible to ground crews.
The Brunswick complex, spanning about 19,000 hectares in the Fraser Canyon, faces rising fire activity as temperatures climb into the high 20s and low 30s throughout the week with humidity dropping into the teens.
Steep terrain and limited access force crews to use heavy equipment establishing contingency lines, the Wildfire Service said. "This region has very steep and at times unworkable terrain," the service explained.
Adam Hart, emergency program coordinator with the City of Merritt, said Monday a "large buffer area" remains between the city and the Ainslie Creek blaze, though officials continue monitoring the situation closely.
Evacuation alerts cover 61 properties near Merritt while the Nooaitch Indian Band advised residents to prepare for departure last week; motorists on Highway 1 should expect ongoing lane closures and traffic interruptions.
