On Saturday, Bruce Springsteen accepted the Harry Belafonte Voices for Social Justice Award at the Tribeca Festival, with U2 frontman Bono presenting the honor to the 76-year-old musician in downtown Manhattan.
Springsteen dedicated the award to citizens in Minneapolis, Portland, and Los Angeles who stood against federal overreach, noting his recent tour mounted criticisms of the Donald Trump regime.
During the conversation, Bono recalled asking Springsteen to license his 2007 song "Girls in Their Summer Clothes" for a Gap commercial, which Springsteen admitted was "a big mistake."
Tribeca Festival co-founder Robert De Niro introduced the event, slamming "Donald J. Trump and his feckless enablers" and arguing the moment reflects "corruption and megalomania of one person."
Closing the evening, Patti Smith performed her 1988 song "People Have the Power" alongside Tony Shanahan in honor of Springsteen, concluding a festival series on democracy's erosion in America.
