Brother of Irish Sports Star Reported Missing in Spain
Police say the killing was a targeted assassination linked to organised crime, and they have released CCTV images of the suspect.
A 36-year-old man was shot dead on Carrer de Balmes in Barcelona on Wednesday, with the Mossos d'Esquadra treating the attack as a targeted assassination linked to organized crime.
The shooting occurred while Barcelona was on high security alert ahead of a visit from Pope Leo XIV on Thursday, though authorities confirmed the murder is unrelated to the papal event.
Investigators recovered the suspected murder weapon from a nearby bus stop in Placa Gal la Placidia and released CCTV images of the suspect to aid the manhunt.
Last Sunday, an unrelated individual was fatally shot in the Zona Franca; meanwhile, Gardaí are liaising with Spanish authorities regarding a separate missing 37-year-old man.
Originally from Dublin, the deceased was the brother of an Irish sports star and described by a local resident as from a family "highly respected in the area.
