Drax Power Station: £20bn Partnership to Deliver Data Centre
Brookfield estimates the project could exceed £20 billion as the partners seek planning and network approvals for the first phase by 2028.
On Tuesday, Drax Group announced a strategic partnership with Brookfield and Radiant to jointly develop and operate a data centre at Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire.
Drax Power Station, which has powered Britain for more than fifty years, was selected for its 1,000 acres and 4GW of grid access providing large-scale reliable power to data centre customers.
Brookfield estimates total investment could exceed $26.8 billion, with an initial $2.5 billion investment targeting up to 100 megawatts of capacity operational from the first quarter of 2028.
The Labour Government supports the initiative aligning with reindustrialisation ambitions, while companies welcome the new Data Centre Covenant designed to accelerate planning approvals.
A community consultation on the plans will begin shortly, with developers targeting an additional 500 megawatts of capacity between 2028 and 2031 to support the UK's AI ecosystem growth.
