British military says cargo ship reports being under attack in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen
UK Maritime Trade Operations said authorities are investigating after the vessel sent a distress signal reporting unknown armed assailants.
On Sunday, a cargo ship reported coming under attack off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea, The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations announced.
Yemen-Based Houthi rebels, who control the Red Sea, previously launched strikes against shipping in the region starting in 2023, although they have recently paused their campaign.
The vessel sent a distress signal reporting an attack by "unknown armed assailants" off the coast of Hudaydah, a major port city, the UKMTO reported.
Authorities are investigating the incident, though no group has claimed responsibility. "Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO," the agency added.
The State Department has designated the Houthis as a terrorist organization. Separately, Somali pirates have been active in the Gulf of Aden, presenting additional regional security risks.
