Britain accelerating hypersonic missile development
The UK plans to spend over £400 million on hypersonic and long-range weapons in 2026, advancing joint projects with France, Germany, and Italy to boost NATO deterrence.
- On Feb. 13, the U.K. Ministry of Defence announced it will spend more than 400 million pounds this year and awarded a contract to Warrington-based Amentum UK, supported by SME partners Ebeni and Synthetik.
- Amid lessons from the war in Ukraine, U.K. Defense Secretary John Healey said, "To meet this new era of rising threats, we need hard power, strong alliances, and sure diplomacy," and the MOD emphasized the need for faster development of modern warfighting technologies.
- Just 31 days after the invitation to tender, the MOD's Commercial X team awarded a contract to develop a hypersonic system expected to undergo flight testing before prototype missiles, the department said.
- The MOD said the contract will accelerate the UK’s sovereign hypersonic capability, support 1,300 jobs for British workers, and replace Storm Shadow missiles.
- The MOD says the Deep Precision Strike system will have a range of over 2,000 km, enter service in the 2030s, and hypersonics funding this year covers testing and post-graduate funding and academic training.
