A bacterium has been discovered in tap water in and around the Dutch city of Utrecht. Residents are therefore advised to boil water before drinking it or rinsing vegetables with it. 125,000 water connections have been affected.
The drinking water contamination in and around Utrecht has no impact on patient care at the University Medical Center Utrecht. According to a hospital spokesperson, large quantities of water have now been boiled and are cooling.
The bacteria was detected during a routine test on Friday night. The reservoir in the Kanaleneiland district has since been disconnected from the rest of the network.
Drinking water is slightly contaminated with enterococci bacteria in parts of Utrecht, Bilthoven, Bosch en Duin, Bunnik, De Bilt, Groenekan, Maarssen, Oud Zuilen, Tienhoven, Westbroek, and Zeist. This was reported by drinking water company Vitens, which advises people to boil water for three minutes before drinking it, using it to prepare food, or brushing their teeth.
