Boeing Unveils New 737 MAX Production Line as Aviation Giant Charts Comeback
The new line gives Boeing extra capacity as it ramps 737 MAX output from 42 to 47 planes a month, officials said.
On Monday, Boeing activated its "North Line" in Everett, Washington, establishing the company's first 737 MAX production facility outside its Renton factory.
Representing a $1 billion investment, the Everett facility occupies space formerly used for the 787 Dreamliner, with Boeing intending to help lift MAX production from 47 to 52 planes per month.
Staffed by 1,000 employees comprised of about 50% new hires and 50% transfers, the line operates as a "partnership" with Renton following Boeing's 10-step "flow days" system.
Federal Aviation Administration approval is required before Boeing can deliver any aircraft from the North Line, and the company has yet to finalize a timeline for certification.
Boeing aims to eventually reach 63 planes per month, though it must first secure certification for the 737 MAX 10 following years of safety setbacks including fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019.
The American aeronautical manufacturer Boeing officially inaugurated on Friday near Seattle the fourth manufacturing line of the 737 MAX monocouloir, its starboard aircraft, which almost caused its loss on several occasions.
